Q: We are a new company and the bank has refused to give us a merchant account until be have a trading record.  What can we do.

A: Some payment gateway companies offer a special type of account where effectively they are the merchant. The percentage cost is higher of course, and they will also hold on to the money for an extended period (e.g. 30 days) to minimise their risk.

Q: I already have a merchant account for card not present transactions.  So I am set - right?

A: Talk to your bank.  They will probably insist on a further account just for internet transactions.  This is an Internet Merchant Account or IMA.
